Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) was one of the most radical artists of the post-1945 era. Moving away from the academic concept of art, he developed an authentic, ‘unadulterated’ style of expression that drew inspiration from voices outside the intellectual art world: scribbles in public spaces, works by the mentally ill, drawings by children and other self-taught artists, for which he soon coined the term ‘art brut’.
