of Malabou
Emanuel de Carvalho is a Portuguese Canadian visual artist based in London. His practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, and sound. He holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam. His work investigates the unstable nature of visual interpretation, often incorporating disruptions, distortions, and fractures that challenge conventional notions of representation. These recurring visual strategies serve as metaphors for the limits of understanding and the fragmentation of meaning in contemporary life. Influenced by critical theory and contemporary philosophy, de Carvalho engages with themes of anarchy, disidentification, sexuality, medicalization, and power. The exhibition emerges from his direct collaboration with philosopher Catherine Malabou, whose concept of destructive and transformative plasticity informs the conceptual architecture of his practice. Together, they are developing a series of theoretical diagrams and interventions to be embedded within sculptural works.
