Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin, is pleased to present an inaugural exhibition of works by Konrad Klapheck (1935–2023), focusing on the artist’s iconic ‘Machine Paintings’. Rejecting the dominance of abstraction in the 1950s, Klapheck developed a highly distinctive figurative style centred on everyday objects such as typewriters, sewing machines, clocks, and bicycles. His machines are instantly recognisable for their cold metallic sheen and monumental appearance. Abstracted, defamiliarised, aestheticised and personified, they withdraw from the logic of the consumer world. Combining elements of Surrealism, New Objectivity and Pop art, Klaphecktransformed ordinary mechanisms into monumental, emotionally resonant images. His works often evoke themes of power, sexuality, alienation and human relationships. Through the interplay of object, title and symbolism, Klapheck’s paintings turn familiar devices into uncanny and psychologically-charged presences.
