NEXT BUT TWO
The cross-generational exhibition NEXT BUT TWO presents recent works by the 97-year-old painter Lois Dodd (b. 1927) along with new works by Hamburg based artist Anna Grath (b. 1986). For over seventy years, Lois Dodd has painted her immediate everyday surroundings at the places she has chosen to live and work – the Lower East Side, rural Mid-Coast Maine and the Delaware Water Gap. Her subjects include rambling New England out buildings, lush summer gardens, dried leafless plants, nocturnal moonlit skies and views through interior windows. She often returns to familiar motifs repeatedly at different times of the year with dramatically varied results. Anna Grath’s delicate wall and room sculptures are constructed from fragile framings, as well as found objects such as branches, wires, glass and other everyday materials. They form assemblages by often combining hard materials with softer ones, such as scraps of fabric and clothing, nylon stockings or simply a ribbon. In the upcoming exhibition, Anna Grath will present new works created in a dialogue with paintings by Lois Dodd.
