Bringing together personal and political histories, Criticism and Self-Criticism in Free Time explores how the role of the artist is shaped by different social conditions and how these shifts become embedded in images, memories and forms of photographic and cinematic representation. Starting from the public mural Sport, Biology and Leisure (1970) by Doris Kahane, Leon Kahane reflects on artistic practice within the tensions between political zeitgeist, institutional commissions and social responsibility. At the centre of the exhibition is a new photographic body of work that records the mural through analogue photography and reconfigures selected details into a spatially conceived frieze.
