COSMIC GIRLBOSS is a group exhibition and series of events that deals with spiritual entrepreneurship and its representation in art. In 2012, sociologist Karen Gregory wrote the essay “Negotiating Precarity: Tarot as Spiritual Entrepreneurialism,” in which she examined the effects of the 2008 recession on spiritual practitioners. She found that many used tarot to interpret social crises as opportunities for personal change rather than changing their material conditions. Today, spiritual entrepreneurship is experiencing an upswing, particularly through digital platform economies such as TikTok and Instagram, where tarot and astrology readings are specifically marketed to women and queer people. COSMIC GIRLBOSS critically and playfully questions how spiritual practices have been used to further neoliberal goals of individualized optimization.
