Double Standard

In the exhibition Double Standard, US artist Anthony Goicolea (*1971) presents new paintings exploring questions of inner and outer perception, of self-determination and societal norms, of cultural influence, sexual orientation and gender roles. 

Goicolea takes viewers on an emotional journey through the spheres of a continuous search for meaning. He shows people in bizarre, melancholic moments in which they seem caught on the edge between reality and the dream world.

His painting style is characterized by an expressive visual language, which he masterfully combines with surreal elements. His motifs appear like snapshots from a movie that has no clear plot but captures the essence of life: the flow of time, the innocence of youth, the beauty of imperfection and the hope that something new and better might come.
