The New England Paintings
The exhibition The New England Paintings by American painter Jim Butler brings together a series of intimate works created over the past five years, painted en plein air in his native northern New England. Butler’s practice combines precise observation of nature with memory and personal experience. The subtlest nuances of light, atmosphere, and color give the paintings an extraordinary immediacy. Landscapes of trees, rivers, and boats draw their power from the quiet intensity of the everyday. His paintings are full of delicate textures; they cast a quiet spell that allows us to experience a world in fragile balance. In the concentrated representation of the familiar lies the universal power of Butler’s work, it is a meditation on time and change, on the intimate, reciprocal bond between humans and the natural world.
